Believe it or not, yet another year has passed. It seems as though New Year’s sneaks up on us time and time again. In some ways, the new millennium hype feels as though it was only yesterday. However, in the world of recruiting, much has changed in the past decade or so, making the pre-2K years seem like ancient history. Advances in technology, remote and virtual offices, and social media influences are all contributing factors in the development. In this ever-evolving field, recruiters must learn to be as flexible as the companies and candidates with whom they work. As 2012 comes to a close, maybe it’s a good year to try something different – rather than make specific resolutions (which are by nature inflexible, and not to mention notoriously broken before January even ends), reflect on the past year and look towards the future with optimism. Instead of lamenting over the low points of 2012, constructively criticize some techniques that didn’t work, and take note of those that did. In order to put your best foot forward for 2013, do a quick analysis of past wins and failures. As with anything, the lessons worth learning are those that are implemented in order to grow as people, professionally and otherwise.
Embrace the spirit New Year’s brings along with the changing world of recruitment! By this we mean, frame your view of this evolving field as something positive. Each January, we encounter renewal. Those who are looking to make changes in their lives see this time as their chance to start fresh. We encourage you to keep this mentality not only throughout the upcoming month, but for the entire year. As companies are always in transition, candidates are constantly presented with opportunities for growth. It is up to us, however, to take advantage of these situations. While it may be within your comfort zone to stick to a generic style of recruitment, it is clear that we need to do more.
Instead, with the New Year approaching, keep in mind the importance of flexibility. The idea of resolutions is grounded in the principle of change for the better. Based on our personal reflections, we strive to enhance our lives and grow from one year to the next. The ability to change one’s behavior would be impossible without a flexible mindset. Therefore, just as we make resolutions to work out, or volunteer, we should resolve to allow this same way of thinking transfer into the world of recruitment. The only resolution we’re suggesting you make is to shy away from rigid principles and procedures. As resolutions tend to be somewhat structured and rigid, we realize that this idea is a bit contradictory. However, the message is important nonetheless.
Because the newest hiring class is made up mainly of Generation-Y, it is especially important now more than ever to embrace adaptable recruitment techniques. These are young people that are always on the move. Most candidates work at least in part remotely and live through their smart phones. Therefore, traditional recruitment techniques may not be the best when communicating with them. With nearly all imaginable information literally at their finger tips, it has become essential to be upfront with today’s candidates. Also, working with their busy schedules is important. Ideal candidates are often those that have a lot going on. These go-getter types often make great employees, and it would be a shame to miss out on them because of scheduling conflicts.
So all in all, we leave you with this simple advice. It’s a New Year, so why stick with the same routine? Embrace changes that may come along instead of resenting them. At the rate we’re going, there’s bound to be at least a dozen more technological advances in 2013 that will affect the way we recruit, so get used to flexibility and it will serve you well.
